Chapter 4: Green Light
The video ends and I’m staring at Courtney’s teeth, they’re the kind of white that not even lasers can create. By her side Jason sits motionless waiting for me to speak, “That’s just the rough cut. I didn’t have enough time editing the rest, we had a busy weekend, if you managed to read my Night Manager Recaps. I had a false alarm rape case and sitings of the neighborhood masturbator, again.”
Courtney sighs, “He’s back? Did you call the police?!”
I sit back and check if my phone’s still in my pocket as I remind her, “I texted you during each incident. Copies of the police report are with security and here’s one on your desk.”
She flips through some pages and leans in, “I have to hand it to you Alfie, these are great shots of the lobby and bedrooms.” Courtney leans back and replays the video.
“When all the guests are checked-in, the audit is rolled, and all the reports are printed, I have a lot of down time. And instead of having my team fight to stay awake I decided to put them their time to good use.”
Jason interrupts, “By turning them into your film crew? If you’re running around the hotel shooting, who’s watching the desk?”
“There is an agent at the desk at all times and I am always available on the radio if I’m needed.” I lean back on the chair, “The rest of the crew are film students from the academy.”
Jason rebuttals, “You don’t have the authority to make those decisions nor the permission to bring non-guests and non-employees into the hotel.”
My toes point like daggers at the both of them, “If I do remember correctly during my interview, Courtney didn’t you say during my shift, I am the acting GM?”
Biting her lip she mutters, “Yes…”
Jason rises and talks for her, “…but not in this case. You brought outsiders into hotel property without proper permission from the hotel GM or hotel owners.”
I stand up, “But I did it out of the intent to contribute something more, than just these reports on your desk every morning.”
He steps closer and meets my eyes, “Alfred, your job description was handed to you at orientation. Your responsibilities are to keep the hotel in order until a higher authority arrives in the morning…
Courtney stands and coddles Jason’s shoulder, “This is just the rough cut?” I nod and focus on her scary dark blue eyes as she continues, “I’m giving you two weeks to finish a final cut. If it’s perfect, I’ll present it to the board for the second quarter meeting.”
“And if it’s not?”
She pulls CP30 out of he laptop, recaps his helmet, and hands him back to me. “Then you go find yourself a career as a producer, because you’ll never work in this industry again.”
